Chihuahua state authorities arrested a man they identify as a suspected criminal operator in the Ojinaga border region and are linking him to the Sept. 12 shooting attack on a state police helicopter, according to a report by Frontera Digital Ojinaga.
Octavio V. L., also known as “El Tavo,” was among two people detained in the municipality of Ojinaga, according to information attributed to Chihuahua’s State Public Security Secretariat, or SSPE.
State authorities identify Octavio as an alleged operator for Sergio M. P., known as “El Menchaca,” in the border region. Authorities also described Octavio as a significant target in regional security investigations and said he is wanted by U.S. authorities, according to the report.
Authorities are also investigating a possible connection between Octavio and the Sept. 12 armed attack on an SSPE helicopter operating between Coyame and Ojinaga.
The helicopter was conducting surveillance when it came under gunfire. Authorities previously reported that the aircraft was struck during the attack and that an observer aboard was injured.
No determination of criminal responsibility has been announced in connection with the helicopter attack. Mexican authorities are expected to determine the detainees’ legal status as the investigation continues.
