Reports of a possible active shooter near Presidio Elementary School prompted a multiagency law enforcement response Monday night before authorities determined the sounds were coming from a truck backfiring, according to the Presidio County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said dispatchers received several 911 calls at about 10:26 p.m. Aug. 17 reporting what callers believed were gunshots in the area of the elementary school, O’Reilly Street and surrounding neighborhoods.
Multiple law enforcement units were sent to the area to investigate the reported threat.
The Presidio County Sheriff’s Office, Presidio Police Department and U.S. Border Patrol participated in the response, according to the sheriff’s office.
After investigating, authorities determined there was no active shooter and that the sounds reported as gunfire were caused by a truck backfiring.
Officials said there was no threat to the public.
