Sul Ross State University has earned full membership in NCAA Division II after completing a three-year provisional process, the university announced.
The NCAA notified Sul Ross State on July 10 that it had met all requirements for full membership. The transition began in 2023, when the university accepted an invitation to join the Lone Star Conference.
Full membership makes Sul Ross State student-athletes eligible to compete for NCAA national championships. University administrators and coaches may also serve on NCAA committees, while the athletic department can apply for grants and professional development opportunities reserved for active member institutions.
“This is truly a landmark day for Sul Ross State University,” Amanda Workman, vice president for intercollegiate athletics, said in a statement. “Our coaches, student-athletes, athletic staff, university leadership and the entire campus community have invested tremendous time and energy into meeting the NCAA’s rigorous standards for membership.”
During the provisional period, Sul Ross State worked to meet NCAA benchmarks covering governance, compliance, academic success, financial stability and student-athlete welfare.
President Carlos Hernandez said the achievement reflects standards extending beyond athletic competition.
“Earning full membership is about far more than athletics,” Hernandez said. “It demonstrates that SRSU has met nationally recognized standards of excellence while remaining committed to the success of our student-athletes in the classroom, in competition and in life.”
Sul Ross State sponsors 12 men’s and women’s NCAA varsity sports, including football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, tennis and cross country.
