Firefighters extinguished a house fire believed to have been caused by a lightning strike Monday afternoon in the Terlingua Ghost Town, according to Terlingua Fire and EMS.
Crews were dispatched at about 12:32 p.m. after receiving a report of a structure fire. Initial reports indicated that lightning had struck the single-story home.
Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the residence. Using a thermal-imaging camera, they located fire concealed inside the ceiling space.
Crews climbed onto the roof, opened part of the structure and extinguished the hidden fire. About 200 gallons of water were used during the response.
Terlingua Fire and EMS said the home was saved without significant fire spread because of the quick work of firefighters and community members who assisted before emergency crews arrived.
No injuries were reported in the department’s statement.
Deputy Fire Chief J.W. Thomason thanked the residents who helped, saying their actions made a difference.
