A fatal crash involving a vehicle fire closed westbound Interstate 20 east of Pecos on Sunday morning, forcing traffic to be diverted through Barstow.
The crash was reported near mile marker 53. Video shared by West Texas Oilfield Traffic Update showed flames and thick smoke rising from the highway as motorists approached the scene.
The Texas Department of Public Safety said the crash remains under investigation and the roadway was closed while emergency crews worked at the scene. DPS indicated that additional information about the fatality would be released later.
Witnesses reported that westbound traffic was being redirected, causing delays for drivers traveling toward Pecos.
Authorities had not immediately released the identity of the person killed or details about the vehicles involved. Drivers were advised to avoid the area, expect delays and use caution near emergency personnel.
