Alpine Animal Services has named Smiley its Pet of the Week and is offering a discounted adoption fee through Sunday, July 19, in hopes of finding the young dog a permanent home.
Smiley can be adopted for $50, half the shelter’s normal adoption fee. The adoption includes spaying, a microchip, heartworm testing and all required vaccinations.
According to shelter staff, Smiley arrived at the shelter on April 27 with four siblings after the litter was surrendered. Initially shy and hesitant around people, she has made significant progress through the efforts of staff and volunteers.
Shelter workers say Smiley has become increasingly curious about visitors and will often approach the front of her kennel to investigate new faces. She also enjoys calm interactions and gentle petting sessions.
Smiley has excelled during play groups with other dogs and is considered a strong candidate for a home with canine companions. Staff report she is doing well with leash training and has maintained a clean kennel, suggesting only minimal house-training may be needed.
Animal Services officials say Smiley would benefit from a patient and understanding adopter who can provide consistency and help her continue building confidence. They describe her as eager to learn and adapt to a new routine.
The dog earned her name from what staff call her distinctive expression. They say she often wags her tail and squints her eyes in a way that resembles a smile, especially when seeking attention from people she trusts.
