Marfa ISD names lone finalist for superintendent

The Marfa Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously named Stephen McCanless as the lone finalist for superintendent during a special called meeting Saturday.

McCanless was selected following the district’s superintendent search process and is expected to become the district’s next leader pending the state-required waiting period before a contract can be finalized.

In a statement posted by the district, trustees announced the unanimous decision and welcomed McCanless to the Marfa community.

Under Texas law, school districts must name a lone finalist and observe a 21-day waiting period before officially hiring a superintendent, except under limited emergency circumstances.
