Texas DPS Trooper Involved in Head-On Collision Near Alpine

A Texas Department of Public Safety vehicle and a pickup truck were involved in a serious head-on collision Tuesday near the intersection of U.S. Highway 67 and State Highway 118, an area local residents described as a dangerous stretch of roadway.

Photos shared on social media showed a DPS Chevrolet Tahoe overturned on its side with significant damage. A blue GMC pickup also sustained heavy damage in the crash. Multiple law enforcement, fire and EMS units responded to the scene.

Initial reports circulating on social media incorrectly suggested a person had been taken into custody. However, witnesses later said no arrests were made.

One witness described the crash as a head-on collision occurring near a blind curve in a passing zone. The witness said the DPS Tahoe and the pickup appeared to have collided on their passenger sides, though the exact direction of travel for each vehicle was unclear because the DPS vehicle came to rest overturned.

Residents commenting on social media noted that the intersection has a history of serious crashes and can be particularly hazardous because of limited visibility and sun glare during certain times of day.

Authorities had not publicly released information on injuries, contributing factors or possible citations as of Tuesday afternoon.

The crash drew a large emergency response and temporarily disrupted traffic in the area.
