Alpine City Council Votes Unanimously to Terminate City Secretary Geoffrey Calderon

The Alpine City Council voted unanimously Tuesday evening to terminate City Secretary Geoffrey “Geo” Raul Calderon following his recent arrest on multiple criminal charges, including possession of a controlled substance.

The council took the action during a special meeting, ending Calderon’s employment with the city after nearly eight years in municipal government and roughly five years as city secretary.

Calderon, 36, was arrested early June 1 on charges including possession of a controlled substance in Penalty Group 1-B in an amount between one and four grams, resisting arrest, tampering with evidence and possession of a prohibited substance in a correctional or civil facility, according to records from the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office.

According to earlier reporting by the Big Bend Sentinel, the controlled substance charge involved an alleged cocaine-related offense. Jail records at the time of the arrest did not immediately list bond information or additional details regarding the location of the incident.

Calderon had served as Alpine’s city secretary since 2021 and briefly served as interim city manager before the appointment of current City Manager Henry Arredondo. He joined the city in 2018 and oversaw administrative functions, coordinated City Council meetings and managed public records and city processes.

The City Council did not publicly discuss details of the allegations during the meeting before voting unanimously to terminate Calderon’s employment.

Arredondo had previously confirmed Calderon’s arrest and said the city would review the matter with its Human Resources Department.

Calderon, an Alpine native and graduate of Alpine High School, had not publicly commented on the allegations as of Tuesday evening.

The criminal charges against Calderon remain pending, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
