The Presidio County Sheriff’s Office shared a hopeful update this week on a small dog found in the county, saying the once-frightened pup is slowly coming out of his shell while officials continue searching for his owner or a permanent home.
In a social media post, the sheriff’s office said deputies and staff have begun calling the dog “Tanner” after caring for him for an extended period.
“What started as a scared little dog hiding from everyone has turned into a toy-loving, snack-accepting, underbite-having gentleman with a very strong attachment to his ducky,” the sheriff’s office wrote.
Officials said Tanner appears to be missing a toe on one rear foot, but described it as an old, healed injury that does not seem to cause him discomfort.
While the dog remains nervous around strangers and takes time to trust people, the sheriff’s office said staff members are seeing signs of growing confidence and affection.
“If this sweet boy belongs to you, please reach out,” the agency wrote. “If not, we’ll keep helping him find the right home.”
The sheriff’s office added a lighthearted warning for anyone considering meeting Tanner: “Those little teeth may steal your heart.”
