A lecture exploring a little-known chapter of El Paso history will examine the killing of Detective Frank Burns and the city’s largely forgotten 1923 drug war.
Historian Bob Chessey will present “The Murder of Detective Frank Burns and El Paso’s Forgotten 1923 Drug War” on Thursday, June 18, at the Magoffin Home Visitor Center, 1117 Magoffin Ave. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the lecture beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The event is part of the Magoffin Home Lecture series celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary and is hosted at the historic Magoffin Home State Historic Site in El Paso.
The presentation will revisit the circumstances surrounding Burns’ death while placing it within the broader context of El Paso’s early 20th-century struggle with narcotics enforcement and border crime.
The lecture is presented in partnership with the Texas Historical Commission, the Magoffin Home State Historic Site, Texas America 250 and Casa Magoffin Compañeros.
