Alpine Animal Services has named Roy its Pet of the Week and is offering a reduced adoption fee in hopes of finding the senior dog a permanent home.
From now through the end of the day Sunday, May 24, Roy can be adopted for $50 — half the standard adoption fee. The fee includes neutering, a microchip, a heartworm test and vaccinations, according to the shelter.
Roy arrived at the shelter after being found as a stray on March 27. Shelter staff said he was covered in ticks and appeared to be experiencing hip problems when he arrived. He was treated for ticks, evaluated by a veterinarian, placed on pain medication for his hips, had his teeth cleaned and was later neutered.
Despite his rough start, shelter staff describe Roy as a calm, affectionate dog who does well with both people and other dogs.
Roy has participated in play groups and is described as a low-energy companion who enjoys spending time outdoors with people nearby. Staff said he prefers human companionship and will often seek out someone to sit with him while outside.
“He is an old gentle giant,” the shelter said, adding that Roy has been “fantastic” with everyone he has met.
Roy also enjoys walks and is described as easy to handle on a leash.
Alpine Animal Services encourages community members interested in adoption to visit Roy at the shelter, located at 2900 Old Marathon Highway in Alpine.
