Far West Texas officials invite homeland security secretary to visit Big Bend

A group of elected officials from Far West Texas and the Big Bend region has invited U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to visit Big Bend National Park and nearby communities that could be affected by border barrier construction.

The April 30 letter says the officials support border security but want direct and transparent communication with local leaders and law enforcement to ensure any measures are effective, fiscally responsible and respectful of the region’s landscape and ecological needs.

The letter asks Mullin to see the region firsthand, discuss collaboration and promote proactive communication with local officials.

The letter was signed by state Rep. Eddie Morales Jr., Sen. Cesar Blanco, Brewster County Judge Greg Henington, Presidio County Judge Jose Portillo, Hudspeth County Judge Joanna MacKenzie and Jeff Davis County Judge Curtis Evans.
