Presidio Mayor John Ferguson is urging a more hands-on approach to any potential visit to the Big Bend region after State Rep. Eddie Morales Jr. shared a letter inviting U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to Far West Texas.
Responding publicly, Ferguson said a visit should go beyond a “photo op” and include time on the ground in areas directly affected by border policy and infrastructure.
“We are going to need more than just a photo op. Maybe a trip on the Chispa Road. A river trip. Visit with local leaders in Presidio. See the concertina wire and learn why it should be gone.
Let’s not just give this lip service; let’s make it reality,” Ferguson wrote.
Ferguson pointed to specific locations and experiences he believes would give federal officials a clearer understanding of local conditions, including traveling along Chispa Road, taking a river trip and meeting with leaders in Presidio.
He also referenced the presence of concertina wire along the Rio Grande, saying officials should see it firsthand and understand local concerns.
