Pet of the Week: ‘Cereal’ available for reduced adoption fee at Alpine shelter

A dog named Cereal, described by staff as a “shelter favorite,” is available for adoption at a reduced fee through Sunday, May 3, at Alpine Animal Services Shelter.

Cereal can be adopted for $50 — half the normal fee — as part of a limited-time promotion. The adoption includes neuter, microchip, heartworm testing and all vaccinations, according to shelter staff.

Cereal arrived at the shelter Jan. 5 after being removed from a hoarding situation in Terlingua. He was the only adult dog from the case who did not immediately secure a temporary foster home.

Initially fearful, Cereal required patience and steady interaction from staff and volunteers. Over time, he began to show signs of trust, progressing from accepting comfort from animal control officers to spending time in the yard and eventually walking on a leash with volunteers.

Shelter staff say he now shows confidence and affection, especially with those who care for him regularly.

Cereal has done well interacting with other dogs, including more energetic companions, and may be a good fit for a household with children, based on information provided by a previous owner. He keeps a clean kennel and walks well on a leash, suggesting minimal basic training may be needed beyond establishing a routine.

He enjoys treats such as peanut butter-filled toys and playing with stuffed animals. Staff members say his standout traits include a tendency to “give hugs” and a friendly demeanor.

Those interested in adopting Cereal can visit the shelter in person to meet him.
