More than 30 volunteers, including Marfa Elementary fourth- and fifth-grade students, took part in an Earth Day cleanup in Alpine as part of the Great American Clean-Up, organizers said.
Keep Alpine Beautiful and the City of Alpine recognized participants following a field trip to the Hal Flanders Recycling Center that included students from Mrs. Cain’s classes and community volunteers. Organizers said the group’s efforts were instrumental to the event’s success.
Volunteers from an Army battalion also assisted with the cleanup, contributing to the collection of about 100.45 pounds of trash and the cleaning of approximately 0.64 miles of creek.
Organizers thanked sponsors for supporting the effort, including Sonic, McDonald’s and Lowe’s Market, which provided coupons, water and electrolytes for participants.
The event was part of broader Earth Day activities aimed at promoting environmental stewardship in the community.
