Fort Stockton ISD students learn food preservation through hands-on thermodynamics lesson

Students in Fort Stockton ISD are gaining practical skills by connecting classroom science with real-world applications through a collaborative lesson on food preservation.

According to a district social media post, Mrs. Davis and Mr. Hill worked together to integrate Home Economics and Family and Consumer Sciences with IPC coursework by exploring thermodynamics and its role in canning and preserving food.

During the lesson, students participated in hands-on activities that demonstrated how heat, temperature and energy transfer impact the safety and longevity of preserved foods. The exercise tied scientific principles directly to everyday life skills, helping students better understand why proper food preservation methods remain important.

Photos shared by the district show students working alongside instructors to prepare jars and fresh ingredients, reinforcing the connection between theory and practice.

The district said the approach helps students develop a deeper understanding of how science applies beyond the classroom while building skills they can use in daily life.
