A controlled burn that escaped containment near Redford on April 13 prompted a multi-agency response as flames threatened nearby homes and raised concerns about potential spread across the U.S.-Mexico border, according to the Presidio Volunteer Fire Department.
Fire crews from the Presidio Volunteer Fire Department responded after the prescribed burn got out of control. The Texas A&M Forest Service was requested as the fire advanced toward residential areas and as additional fires on the Mexican side posed a risk of crossing the border.
Crews focused on structure protection and containing the fire’s spread, operating under a unified command. Firefighters deployed water, foam, hand tools and bulldozer-cut fire lines during approximately 10 hours of operations.
On April 14, crews returned to the area to conduct planned prescribed burns and complete final mop-up efforts, working an additional 10 hours to secure the scene.
Officials said the area is currently under a burn ban and urged the public to follow all guidelines to prevent similar incidents. The department also encouraged safe, controlled burning practices on both sides of the border and advised residents to reach out for guidance on safe burning procedures.
