Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry will deliver the spring commencement address at Sul Ross State University on Friday, May 8, at 4 p.m.
The ceremony will take place at the Pete P. Gallego Center in Alpine.
Perry, the 47th governor of Texas, served from 2000 to 2015 and remains the longest-serving governor in state history. During his tenure, he promoted economic policies aimed at growth, helping position Texas as a major global economy and a national leader in job creation, energy production and innovation.
After leaving the governor’s office, Perry served as the 14th U.S. secretary of energy from 2017 to 2019. In that role, he oversaw the Department of Energy’s responsibilities, including stewardship of the nation’s nuclear arsenal, scientific research initiatives, electric grid security and energy development.
A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Perry flew C-130 tactical airlift missions in Europe and the Middle East. He has also been involved in advocacy efforts supporting veterans, particularly those affected by post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.
Perry graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in animal science and was a member of the Corps of Cadets and a Yell Leader.
“We are honored to welcome Governor Perry to Sul Ross State University for this year’s spring commencement,” said Sul Ross President Carlos Hernandez. “His leadership, public service and commitment to innovation make him an inspiring voice for our graduates as they begin the next chapter of their lives.”
