Backyard Astronomy Event Set for Fort Leaton on April 16

A community stargazing event, “Backyard Astronomy,” is scheduled for Thursday, April 16, 2026, at Fort Leaton State Historic Site.

The event will begin at 8:30 p.m. and invites attendees to explore the night sky in a historic setting known for its dark-sky visibility.

Organizers encourage participants to download a stargazing app in advance to enhance the experience. Recommended apps include Stellarium Mobile, Star Gazer and Sky Map.

Attendees are also advised to bring a chair, water and a red-light flashlight, which helps preserve night vision while observing celestial objects.

The event is expected to offer a relaxed, educational opportunity for residents and visitors to engage with astronomy under West Texas skies.
