Alpine claims fourth straight district title with 7-1 win over Kermit

The Alpine Varsity Fightin’ Lady Bucks secured their fourth consecutive district championship Monday, using a late surge to defeat Kermit 7-1.

Alpine broke open a tight contest in the seventh inning, scoring four runs to seal the victory. Emyliana Hernandez drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in a run, Kody Hawkins added a run after tagging up, and Reyna Martinez delivered a two-run single to cap the rally.

“The girls battled through today,” coach Virdell said. “We struggled at the plate, but we were also very disciplined. We took advantage of small opportunities that helped us score.”

The Lady Bucks first got on the board in the third inning when Kody Hawkins singled to drive in a run.

Kacy Hawkins earned the win in the circle, pitching a complete game. She allowed four hits and one run over seven innings while striking out six and walking four.

At the plate, Martinez led the team with two RBIs, finishing 1-for-3 from the ninth spot in the lineup. Taryn Hardin recorded two hits in three at-bats, and Kacy Hawkins drew three walks as Alpine showed patience with nine walks as a team.

The Lady Bucks were also aggressive on the bases, tallying six stolen bases. Kody Hawkins, Kacy Hawkins and Hardin each recorded multiple steals.

“Super happy for my seniors—they get to end this year with a district championship. Very well deserved,” Virdell said. “We needed a close game to get us ready for playoffs, and it was definitely good for us to have one. Very proud of all the girls. On to the next.”

Alpine will travel to Big Spring to face the Steers on Friday.
