A stranded motorist was rescued east of Marathon after floodwaters swept the individual’s vehicle approximately 60 yards downstream at a low water crossing, according to the Marathon Volunteer Fire Department.
The incident occurred April 3, when responders were alerted to a driver whose vehicle had been overtaken by rising المياه at a ranch crossing. A joint response from Marathon Volunteer Fire Department and Alpine Fire Rescue located the vehicle resting along the bank of a creek.
Fire personnel assisted the driver in freeing the vehicle and navigating it out of the creek bed. Officials reported no injuries and only minor damage to the vehicle. Crews cleared the scene at approximately 9:20 p.m.
Authorities reminded residents to use caution during storms, noting that flood conditions can occur even when rainfall is not present in a specific location. Runoff from heavy rain upstream can quickly cause dangerous conditions at low water crossings.
“Thankfully there was little damage in a situation that could’ve proven tragic under different circumstances,” Fire Chief B. Wilson said in a statement.
