High above the winding ribbon of the Rio Grande, where desert mountains meet deep canyons and vast open sky, a small aviation company is offering a new perspective on one of Texas’ most rugged and remote regions.
Rio Aviation Inc., founded by retired Big Bend ranger Marcos Paredes, provides scenic air tours over some of the most iconic landscapes in Far West Texas and northern Mexico. Operating year-round out of Terlingua, the company gives passengers a bird’s-eye view of landmarks across Big Bend Ranch State Park, Big Bend National Park and the Reserva Santa Elena.
For Paredes, the venture is a natural extension of a lifetime spent exploring and protecting the region. Drawing on decades of firsthand experience, he guides passengers not just through the air, but through the history and geography of a place few ever fully see.
Flights highlight sweeping features such as the Solitario — a massive collapsed volcanic dome — along with remote stretches of the Rio Grande’s canyon system. Passengers may also glimpse the Dahlquist research site, often referred to as the “Devil’s Playground,” a geologically rich and rarely visited area.
“There are many ways to experience this country,” Paredes said. “But seeing it from above offers a completely different appreciation for its scale and beauty.”
Rio Aviation is authorized to conduct scenic flights over the Big Bend region and operates under Federal Aviation Administration Part 91 air tour certification. Safety remains a central focus, with all flights subject to weather and weight considerations.
The company’s aircraft, nicknamed “Ol’ Brownie,” is a Cessna 205 — a model long favored in rugged environments for its durability and performance. Known as a “Super Skywagon,” the plane has been modified with a short takeoff and landing (STOL) kit, improving stability and allowing access to shorter airstrips common in remote terrain.
With seating for up to four passengers, the aircraft’s high-wing design offers unobstructed views, making it especially appealing for sightseeing and photography.
Flights are priced at $150 per person per hour, or $500 for up to four passengers. Tours can be scheduled by calling (432) 557-9477.
As tourism in the Big Bend region continues to grow, Rio Aviation offers a distinctive way to experience its vastness — one that connects visitors to the land through both elevation and insight.
From the quiet expanse of desert basins to the dramatic cuts of the Rio Grande, the view from above tells a story that even seasoned travelers may be seeing for the first time.
