A former volunteer firefighter accused of setting multiple brush fires over a two-year period received deferred adjudication this week, avoiding a conviction if he remains out of legal trouble, according to reporting by Big Bend Sentinel.
David Matthew Neet, 46, had been indicted on an arson charge after a series of fires alarmed residents in 2024. Investigators tied him to the incidents through vehicle sightings, surveillance footage and purchase records linked to fireworks materials.
He was initially arrested in July 2024 and later released on bond. Prosecutors ultimately reached a plea agreement, and the case will be dismissed without a finding of guilt if conditions are met over the next decade.
