A Texas-wide gathering aimed at celebrating First Amendment rights and promoting conservation in the Big Bend region is set for Saturday morning at Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park.
Organizers of the “Big Bend Big Picnic” are inviting participants to pack a lunch and “take a stand” in support of preserving the region. The family-friendly event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon on April 4, 2026.
The picnic will take place at Santa Elena Canyon, one of the park’s most recognizable landmarks. Organizers describe the event as a day of solidarity for the Big Bend region, encouraging attendees from across Texas to participate.
Carpools are planned to depart at 8 a.m. from Study Butte Store, located at 53757 U.S. Highway 118, across from Cottonwood Grocery.
Participants are encouraged to bring water bottles, picnic supplies and musical instruments, with water and coolers expected to be available on-site. Organizers also recommend bringing blankets and preparing to pay the park entrance fee at the booth upon arrival.
Event guidelines prohibit alcohol, tables, electronic or Bluetooth speakers, and the posting of signs or banners on rocks or trees. Attendees are also asked to follow Leave No Trace principles.
An afterparty is scheduled for 6 p.m. at French Co. Grocer in Marathon and is open to the public.
