Students from Sul Ross State University’s Range Management program recently participated in the 2026 annual meeting of the Society for Range Management, where global perspectives on rangeland stewardship and pastoral practices were highlighted.
The conference brought together speakers from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Tribal Nations and Africa, focusing on shared challenges in land management. Through workshops and breakout sessions, attendees explored topics including wildlife conservation, prescribed fire, invasive species control and ranching practices.
Sul Ross students also competed in a national plant identification contest, earning an eighth-place finish among 22 teams. The team prepared by studying approximately 200 plant species, demonstrating both technical knowledge and field expertise.
University officials said the experience provided students with professional development opportunities and exposure to a wide range of approaches to land stewardship.
