Visitors to Big Bend Ranch State Park will have the chance to explore the Chihuahuan Desert after sunset during a guided night hike scheduled for Friday, April 3.
The program, titled “Creepy Crawlies After Dark,” begins at 8:30 p.m. at the Hoodoos Trailhead along FM 170, about 25 miles from the Barton Warnock Visitor Center and 25 miles east of Fort Leaton State Historic Site.
Led by park staff, the hike will focus on nocturnal desert life, including scorpions that glow under ultraviolet light, as well as other insects and animals that emerge after dark. Participants will also experience the sounds and conditions of the desert at night while exploring the Hoodoos area.
Organizers recommend bringing red-light flashlights to preserve night vision, along with water, bug spray, weather-appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes.
The program is free with park admission. Entry costs $5 for visitors age 13 and older, while children 12 and under are admitted free. Admission is also free for Texas State Parks Pass holders.
Attendees are encouraged to reserve day passes in advance online. Those who do not reserve ahead of time must bring exact change or a valid parks pass to use self-pay stations at either the Barton Warnock Visitor Center or Fort Leaton.
Program details may change due to weather or other conditions. Visitors are advised to check the park’s official social media channels for updates.
