Big Bend Amateur Radio Club to host open house in Alpine on April 18

The Big Bend Amateur Radio Club will host a ham radio open house on April 18 at the Alpine Public Library, offering demonstrations, information and hands-on activities for attendees of all ages.

The event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., coincides with World Amateur Radio Day and aims to introduce the public to amateur radio operations and emergency communications.

Organizers say visitors can look for the club’s RV in the library parking lot and explore a range of activities throughout the day.

An information table will provide details about ham radio, the American Radio Relay League, the Big Bend Amateur Radio Club, Field Day events and licensing opportunities, including course sign-ups.

Demonstrations will feature ham radios, handheld devices, repeaters, GMRS systems, Rapid Radio technology and satellite radio capabilities.

The event will also highlight service activities supported by amateur radio operators, including CycleFest, the Big Bend Ultra, Amateur Radio Emergency Service operations and emergency response communications.

Children ages 6 to 14 can participate in free hands-on kit-building activities, including Morse code buzzers and oscillators.

Organizers say the open house is designed to showcase the role amateur radio plays in community events and emergency preparedness while encouraging new participants to get involved.
