Sul Ross State University and Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua have formalized a strengthened international partnership through a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding aimed at expanding cross-border academic collaboration.
The agreement reflects a shared commitment to advancing research, enhancing educational opportunities and fostering student and faculty engagement between the two institutions.
Under the partnership, SRSU and UACH plan to expand academic exchange programs, promote collaborative research initiatives and develop hands-on learning opportunities designed to prepare students to address global challenges.
“This partnership is more than a signed document, it represents a deep commitment to collaborative science, education and stewardship of our shared Chihuahuan Desert,” said Provost and Executive Vice President Bernie Cantens. “By working together, we can better serve our students, our communities and the region we both call home.”
The initiative was led by Carlos Gonzalez-Gonzalez, an associate professor in SRSU’s College of Agriculture, Life and Physical Sciences, who will help develop programs focused on natural resource management.
Officials said the collaboration builds on longstanding geographic and cultural ties between West Texas and northern Mexico, creating opportunities for joint research and academic engagement. Faculty and students from both institutions are expected to participate in projects addressing environmental, economic and social issues affecting the border region.
The agreement took effect immediately and is expected to generate new programs and initiatives in the coming months.
