Sul Ross State University sees record application surge during Texas’ Free College Application Week

Sul Ross State University reported a record-breaking surge in student applications during Texas’ first-ever Free College Application Week last October, reflecting growing momentum for future enrollment at the West Texas institution.

The statewide initiative, led by Gov. Greg Abbott and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, waived application fees for all Texas public colleges and universities from Oct. 13–19, 2025, removing a key financial barrier for prospective students.

During that single week, Sul Ross’ Alpine campus received more than 1,000 applications for the first time in university history — a 695% increase compared to the same week the previous year.

The university’s international campus also saw notable gains, receiving more than 60 first-year applications. Officials say Fall 2026 will mark a milestone with the arrival of the first “Freshmen Founders” class at Sul Ross International.

Free College Application Week was created by the Texas Legislature to expand access to higher education by eliminating application fees, which can discourage students — particularly those from first-generation and underserved backgrounds — from applying.

Through the initiative, Texas residents can apply to any public college or university using ApplyTexas at no cost, part of a broader effort to increase college participation and strengthen the state’s future workforce.

University officials say the record-setting week underscores both the demand for accessible higher education and the impact of targeted state programs designed to reduce financial barriers.
