Terlingua’s La Kiva Restaurant & Bar Expands Menu and Weekly Events, From Pickers Circles to House-Made Comfort Food

A longtime gathering place in the Big Bend region is giving locals and visitors more reasons to stop by, with new menu offerings, live music nights, and community-focused events at La Kiva Restaurant & Bar.

Located along FM 170 in Terlingua, La Kiva has built a reputation over the years as a laid-back desert destination where food, music, and community intersect. Recent updates highlight both the venue’s evolving kitchen and its ongoing commitment to live entertainment.

A Menu Mixing Comfort and Creativity

The current menu blends Southwestern influences with hearty comfort dishes and house-made elements. Among the standout items are a chipotle mole baked cheese dip served in a hot skillet with crostinis, garlic cheese bread on a large flatbread with cactus ranch, and a pineapple black bean salad featuring cotija cheese and nopal cactus dressing.

More substantial options include a chicken bacon poblano mac with creamy poblano sauce, a shredded beef dip sandwich on a bolillo roll with escabeche, and a Southwestern bánh mì combining pork belly with black bean pâté, cilantro, and lime crema.

The restaurant also offers a large Navajo-style chicken chile verde taco and a selection of hand-tossed pizzas made from scratch dough. Specialty pies include a Mexican margherita with arbol tomato base and cilantro lime crema, a chorizo-poblano pizza with hot honey pico, and a barbecue chicken option with grilled pineapple.

Sides such as homemade potato chips with queso and desserts like hot honey lime sopapillas round out the offerings.

Live Music and Community Nights

La Kiva continues to emphasize its role as a social hub with recurring events throughout the week. Pickers circles and song swaps bring local musicians together for informal performances, while karaoke nights add a more interactive atmosphere. Sunday gatherings sometimes extend into flea-market-style events in the parking area paired with brunch at the bar.

Frozen margaritas — including a guava hibiscus flavor made with real juice — have also returned, adding to the venue’s casual, desert-bar appeal.

A Desert Gathering Place

For many in the Terlingua and Study Butte area, La Kiva serves as more than a restaurant. It functions as a meeting place where travelers, locals, musicians, and outdoor enthusiasts cross paths — a role that has helped sustain its popularity despite the region’s remote location.

With its combination of house-made food, regular entertainment, and a welcoming atmosphere, La Kiva remains one of the Big Bend region’s recognizable social anchors.

The restaurant is located at 23220 FM 170 in Terlingua. More information is available through its website and social media channels.
