Marfa Students Compete at Regional Science Fair in Odessa

A group of Marfa ISD students traveled to Odessa to participate in the Regional Science Fair held at The University of Texas Permian Basin, showcasing projects across a wide range of scientific disciplines.

The students, under the guidance of teacher Lizzy Donaldson, developed research and demonstration projects that explored topics including plant biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, and behavioral studies. Their work included experimental investigations, engineering and modeling projects, and presentations designed to explain complex scientific concepts.

Support for the students’ participation was provided in part by the Marfa Education Foundation, helping ensure they could represent their school at the regional competition.

The projects reflected months of preparation and hands-on learning, with students applying classroom knowledge to real-world questions such as how environmental conditions affect plant growth, how energy systems function, and how water quality can be measured and improved.

Participation in regional science competitions offers students opportunities to develop research skills, critical thinking, and public presentation abilities while connecting with peers from across West Texas who share similar academic interests.

School leaders and community supporters expressed pride in the students’ dedication and effort, noting that experiences like the regional fair help inspire future careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.
