Valentine’s 2026 Postmark Design Showcases Student Artwork in West Texas Tradition

Preparations are underway in the small West Texas town of Valentine for one of its most recognized annual traditions, as the Valentine Post Office begins offering its 2026 pictorial Valentine’s Day postmark.

Each year, the custom-designed cancellation draws thousands of letters and greeting cards from across Texas and beyond, making the tiny community a seasonal hub for Valentine’s Day mail. The postmark has become a symbol of local pride and a way for residents and students to contribute to a tradition that connects the town to people nationwide.

This year’s design was selected through a student art competition held within the Valentine Independent School District. The winning artwork was created by 11th-grade student Romeo Garcia, whose drawing reflects the surrounding landscape and everyday scenes of life in the region. The annual contest gives students an opportunity to take part in a longstanding community practice while showcasing their creativity.

Garcia is the son of Monica Navarrete Garcia of Van Horn and Rene Garcia of Poolville. He has attended schools in the Valentine district throughout his education and is active in both academics and extracurricular activities.

The Valentine Post Office becomes especially busy in early February as mail arrives in large volumes from individuals seeking the special cancellation. Many send cards to friends and family as keepsakes, while others collect the postmarks as part of a larger postal memorabilia tradition.

Postmaster Ismelda Ornelas, a Valentine ISD alumna and former contest winner, oversees the annual operation. Each season, she and her staff process thousands of envelopes by hand, ensuring that each receives the distinctive Valentine postmark before being sent to its destination.

Residents and visitors often refer to the post office as the “Love Station” during the Valentine’s Day season, reflecting its role in spreading messages of affection across the country and around the world.

Those who wish to participate may submit stamped greeting cards inside a larger envelope addressed to the Love Station at the Valentine Post Office on West California Avenue. The special cancellation will be available through March 14. There is no charge for requests of up to 50 envelopes, with a small fee applied for larger quantities.

Over the years, the Valentine postmark has grown into an internationally recognized tradition, highlighting how a small rural community can leave a lasting impression through creativity, cooperation, and local involvement.

As the 2026 season begins, residents and postal workers once again prepare to handle the influx of mail, continuing a custom that blends student talent, community pride, and West Texas character into a uniquely personal form of communication.
