Residents across Jeff Davis County will have their first opportunity to step inside the newly renovated county shelter and community center on Monday during a public open house scheduled from 3 to 6 p.m.
The event will take place at the facility located at 601 Cemetery Road and will include guided tours, refreshments, and a brief program recognizing the completion of the long-term renovation project. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for 3:30 p.m.
County leaders say the open house marks an important milestone after several years of planning, fundraising, and construction. The project began with grant funding and private donations that allowed the county to purchase and rehabilitate the building for use as both a community gathering space and an emergency shelter.
Over the past two years, contractors completed major upgrades to the structure, mechanical systems, and interior spaces. The improvements were designed to make the building suitable for public meetings, community programs, special events, and emergency response operations.
Once fully operational, the center is expected to serve as a central hub for community activities throughout the county. It will host meetings, educational programs, and public events, while also providing a critical resource during natural disasters or other emergencies.
County officials have indicated that information on reserving the facility for future use will be made available through the county’s website.
The open house will feature remarks from invited guests, including representatives connected to regional and congressional offices. Local residents are encouraged to attend and see firsthand how the renovated space will support community needs in the years ahead.
The project represents the completion of a multi-year investment aimed at strengthening local infrastructure and expanding access to public services. Leaders say the new center reflects ongoing efforts to improve quality of life and emergency preparedness for residents across Jeff Davis County.
The facility is scheduled to begin full operations following the February 16 public event.
