Living History Days to Bring Frontier Past to Life in Fort Stockton

The Fort Stockton Historical Society and the Annie Riggs Memorial Museum are inviting the public to step back in time during Living History Days, set for March 26–28 at Historic Fort Stockton.

The three-day event will feature interactive demonstrations, reenactments, and educational programs highlighting life in West Texas during the 19th century. Activities will run daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 301 East Fourth Street in Fort Stockton.

Organizers say the event is designed to immerse visitors in the region’s military, cultural, and frontier history. Attractions will include Buffalo Soldiers reenactments, cavalry demonstrations, blacksmithing, adobe construction, and historical encampments representing forts such as Fort Lancaster, Fort Richardson, Fort McKavett, and Fort Concho.

One of the featured highlights this year is a presentation on the historic U.S. Camel Corps, which briefly operated in West Texas during the mid-1800s. Visitors will also learn about the area’s Indigenous history, including the Jumano Nation and Lipan Apache, through cultural exhibits and demonstrations.

Additional programming includes 19th-century games, chuck wagon displays, schoolhouse reenactments, cannon demonstrations, and period clothing exhibits. Artifacts such as arrowheads and frontier tools will also be on display.

A special concert event is planned for Thursday night, featuring historical-themed performances connected to the Buffalo Soldiers, cavalry units, and frontier life.

Organizers say Living History Days is intended for all ages, offering hands-on learning opportunities for students, families, and history enthusiasts. Volunteers and reenactors from across the region will be on hand to answer questions and share stories from the past.

Admission is open to the public, and community members are encouraged to attend and explore the rich heritage of Pecos County and the surrounding region.

For many local residents, Living History Days has become an annual tradition, celebrating the people, cultures, and events that shaped West Texas. Event organizers say this year’s program continues that tradition while expanding educational outreach and community engagement.

Living History Days will take place March 26–28 at Historic Fort Stockton, with daily activities scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
