The Alpine Bucks varsity tennis team delivered a strong performance at this week’s tournament, showcasing determination, resilience, and continued development across singles and doubles competition.
Every athlete competed with intensity and focus, battling through challenging matches while sharpening skills that will benefit the team throughout the season.
Strong Showing in Girls Singles
Girls singles play was led by Megan Struthers, who earned a third-place finish after an impressive run through the bracket. Struthers opened the tournament with confident victories over E. Tercero of Brownfield and A. Bland of Midland Christian, displaying consistency, patience, and smart shot selection.
After a hard-fought semifinal loss to A. Barriga of Monahans, Struthers responded with poise, rebounding to defeat M. Brownlow of Midland Christian in the third-place match. Her ability to reset mentally and perform under pressure reflected her growth and competitive mindset.
Mariana Palazuelos captured the Girls Singles Consolation Championship after an inspiring comeback run. Following a first-round loss to Brownlow, Palazuelos regrouped and defeated A. Vidarre of Lamesa, B. Baker of Wink, and K. Dominguez of Odessa Compass to claim the title.
Palazuelos’ energy, court coverage, and determination were evident throughout the day, highlighting her resilience and steady improvement.
Progress in Doubles Play
In girls doubles, the team of G. Dominguez and J. Kinkade competed hard and gained valuable experience, falling in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket. The duo demonstrated strong communication and hustle as they continued to build chemistry.
V. Santos and M. Carter advanced to the consolation finals in girls doubles, putting together an impressive tournament run. The pair fell just short against Vidarre and Ramon of Brownfield in the final, but their performance showcased aggressive net play, strong teamwork, and persistence during long rallies.
Mixed Doubles Experience
In mixed doubles, the teams of E. Marta and J. Prieto, along with A. Bruttomesso and J. Juett, competed in tough matches and exited in the first round of the consolation bracket. Despite the outcomes, both teams displayed strong effort, sportsmanship, and a commitment to learning.
