A once-shy rescue dog named Cereal is now winning hearts as this week’s Pet of the Week at the Alpine Animal Services Shelter, where he is available for adoption at a special reduced fee.
Through the end of Sunday, February 8, Cereal can be adopted for $50, half the normal adoption cost. The fee includes neutering, a heartworm test, microchipping, and all required vaccinations.
Cereal arrived at the shelter on January 5 after being rescued from a hoarding situation in Terlingua. He was the only adult dog from the case who was unable to secure a temporary foster home, leaving shelter staff concerned about his emotional well-being.
When he first entered the shelter, Cereal was extremely fearful and withdrawn. Staff members say they were unsure if he would ever learn to trust again. Through daily patience, reassurance, and quiet companionship, employees and volunteers worked with him one milestone at a time.
His progress was gradual but steady. Cereal first began cuddling with animal control officers, then ventured into the yard for outdoor time, and eventually learned to walk on a leash with volunteers. Today, staff describe him as confident, affectionate, and fully trusting of those who care for him.
Shelter workers report that Cereal has responded well to other dogs and shows a strong desire to play, making him a good fit for an active household with playful canine companions. According to his previous owner, he also did well with children, suggesting he may thrive in a family environment.
Cereal is described as well-mannered in his kennel and continues to improve on leash training. Staff members believe he will need minimal basic training, focusing mainly on learning a consistent routine. He enjoys peanut butter-filled Kongs in the evenings and has a fondness for stuffed toys.
Among his most endearing traits, staff say, are his love of giving hugs and his “big, beautiful smile.” They describe him as a dog who “loves to love” and is eager to form strong bonds with a new family.
Cereal is currently available for adoption at the Alpine Animal Services Shelter, located at 2900 Old Marathon Highway in Alpine.
Shelter officials encourage anyone interested in providing Cereal with a permanent home to visit and meet him in person before the special adoption rate expires.
