Big Bend Regional Fire Academy Hosts Weekend Skills Training in Terlingua

Firefighters from across the Big Bend region gathered in Terlingua over the weekend of Jan. 31–Feb. 1 for specialized training hosted by Terlingua Fire & EMS as part of the Big Bend Regional Fire Academy.

The two-day session focused on essential firefighting and emergency response skills, including rope and knot techniques, fire extinguisher use for common building materials and chemical spills, and forcible entry procedures.

The annual academy, now in its third year, brings together departments from throughout Far West Texas to strengthen coordination, improve technical skills, and enhance regional preparedness.

Participating agencies included Alpine Fire Department, Fort Davis Fire Department, Big Bend National Park Fire, Marathon Fire Department, Terlingua Fire & EMS, and Ozona Fire Department.

Organizers said the hands-on training helps ensure firefighters are prepared for the wide range of emergencies they may encounter in remote and rural communities, where mutual aid and shared expertise are critical.

“This academy gives our firefighters the opportunity to train together and build the skills they need to protect their communities,” said Deputy Fire Chief J.W. Thomason, AEMT, Public Information Officer. “It’s an important investment in safety for both responders and the public.”

The Big Bend Regional Fire Academy is held annually and continues to grow as departments across the region work collaboratively to strengthen emergency response capabilities and public safety.
