Alpine Animal Services has selected Cereal as its Pet of the Week and is offering a reduced adoption fee through Sunday, Feb. 8.
From now until the end of the day Sunday, Cereal can be adopted for $50, half the regular adoption cost. The fee includes neutering, a heartworm test, microchipping, and all required vaccinations.
Cereal arrived at the shelter on Jan. 5 after being rescued from a hoarding case in Terlingua. He was the only adult dog from the case who was unable to secure a temporary foster home.
Shelter staff said Cereal was extremely fearful when he first arrived and hesitant to trust people. Through consistent care, patience, and reassurance from animal control officers and volunteers, he gradually began to feel safe. Over the course of several weeks, Cereal progressed from cautiously accepting affection to enjoying time in the yard and learning to walk on a leash.
Staff members report that Cereal is now fully comfortable with those caring for him and continues to grow more confident each day.
Cereal has done well with other dogs introduced at the shelter and enjoys playful companions. According to information from his previous owner, he also did well with children, making him a potential fit for a family home.
He keeps a clean kennel, is improving steadily on leash walks, and is responding well to routine training. Staff say he enjoys peanut butter-filled toys and stuffed animals, especially in the evenings.
Shelter employees describe Cereal as affectionate and outgoing, noting his fondness for giving hugs and his distinctive, cheerful smile.
Cereal is available for adoption at Alpine Animal Services Shelter, located at 2900 Old Marathon Highway in Alpine.
Community members interested in meeting Cereal are encouraged to visit the shelter before the adoption special ends on Sunday.
