Students in the Marfa Independent School District recently participated in a creative writing and playwriting program led by Ramón Esquivel, a professor at California Polytechnic State University.
Esquivel worked with local students through the 15th annual playwriting program organized by Marfa Live Arts, bringing professional arts instruction into classrooms across the district.
According to district officials, the program focused on helping students develop their creative voices, confidence, and storytelling skills through hands-on writing and collaboration. Students worked in small groups, shared ideas, and received direct guidance from Esquivel throughout the process.
School leaders also credited teachers Mrs. Hartnett and Ms. Foster for partnering with Marfa Live Arts and coordinating the program, which allowed students to engage directly with a working playwright.
“Collaborations like this connect professional artists, dedicated teachers, and students in powerful ways,” district representatives said in a social media post highlighting the program.
Educators noted that the experience gave students an opportunity to explore self-expression, teamwork, and critical thinking while learning the fundamentals of dramatic writing.
The annual program has become a valued tradition in Marfa, reinforcing the district’s commitment to arts education and community partnerships.
