Pastel Workshop on Light and Color Set for April at Museum of the Big Bend

Artists and art enthusiasts will have an opportunity to deepen their skills this spring during a three-day pastel workshop at the Museum of the Big Bend on the campus of Sul Ross State University.

“Painting the Light in Pastel,” led by Jeannette Cuevas, will be held April 24–26, 2026, in Alpine. The workshop focuses on helping artists understand how light transforms color and how to translate those effects into pastel paintings.

Cuevas, a professional pastel artist and instructor, will guide participants through a range of techniques, including watercolor underpaintings, layering pastels, expressive mark making, and observational strategies for capturing light and atmosphere. The workshop also includes demonstrations and individual instruction.

Organizers said the program is designed for artists seeking to strengthen both technical skills and creative confidence in working with pastels.

The cost for the three-day workshop is $350, with lunches included.

The event is presented by the Big Bend Arts Council, which regularly hosts educational and cultural programs in the Big Bend region.

The workshop will take place at the Museum of the Big Bend, located at 400 North Harrison Street on the Sul Ross campus.

Registration is available by email. Interested participants may contact Sharon Haney at SharonHaney@gmail.com for more information and to reserve a space. Seating is limited.
