Midland Historical Society to Host Lecture on Historic Pecos River Crossing

The Midland Texas Historical Society will host a Brown Bag Lunch and Lecture next week focused on the historic Horsehead Crossing on the Pecos River, a key transportation and migration route in early West Texas history.

The lecture will take place Tuesday, Jan. 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and will be held at The Petroleum Museum in Midland.

The presentation will be led by Tom Ashmore, president of the West Texas Archeological Society and the official historian for Horsehead Crossing. Ashmore has studied the site for more than 16 years and will discuss its significance as one of the few fordable crossings on the Pecos River during the region’s early development.

Horsehead Crossing was used by Jumano Indians, Comanche raiders, wagon trains, stagecoaches, freight haulers and cattle drives, serving as a vital corridor through what was once a largely open and unsettled landscape.

Ashmore will also share insights into his research methods, which include the use of satellite imagery and drone technology. Drawing on experience from a 40-year career in U.S. Air Force intelligence, he has applied modern tools to uncover details of the site’s lost history.

Admission to the lecture is free. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch, and desserts and drinks will be provided.
