Cowboy Poetry Rides Again: Lone Star Gathering Returns to Alpine Feb. 19–21

For nearly four decades, the Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering has drawn wordsmiths, musicians, ranchers, and poetry lovers to Alpine for a celebration of the working cowboy’s life — and it’s back this February with more events than ever.

From February 19–21, 2026, Sul Ross State University and other venues around Alpine will host a weekend of heartfelt performances, chuckwagon breakfasts, and storytelling that’s as vast as the West Texas sky.

A Tradition of Storytelling

Now in its 38th year, the Gathering honors the oral traditions of cowboy culture through poetry, song, and spoken word. Performers from across the West bring their lived experiences — and sharp wit — to the stage, offering a moving and often humorous window into ranch life.

“There’s nothing quite like hearing someone tell their story in verse,” said Kay Nowell, co-chair of the event. “People are fascinated by what’s real. Cowboy poetry is personal, and powerful.”

What to Expect

This year’s event features a mix of free and ticketed performances on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, along with:

  • Chuckwagon breakfasts served fresh outdoors
  • Youth poetry contests celebrating the next generation
  • Art and gear displays from local makers
  • A chance to meet poets, songwriters, and musicians who carry on cowboy traditions

Attendees are encouraged to come early and stay longer, taking in the Big Bend’s spectacular views and authentic hospitality. Alpine’s clear skies, historic architecture, and nearby parks make it an ideal destination for anyone looking to connect with nature and culture in one unforgettable weekend.

Bastrop Joins the Ride

In a new twist, the Gathering is also expanding to Bastrop, east of Austin, with simultaneous events and performances in “the most historic small town in Texas.” Shows and chuckwagon events will run from Wednesday through Saturday at locations throughout Bastrop.
