Marfa High School students recently stepped beyond the classroom and onto the Shakespearean stage during a field trip to the Odessa Globe Theatre, where they experienced a live performance connected to their English and literature studies.
Students enrolled in Mrs. Hartnett’s British Literature & Theatre classes and Ms. Foster’s Sophomore English classes attended the performance after studying Julius Caesar, allowing them to see Shakespeare’s work presented in a professional theatrical setting. Educators said the experience helped deepen students’ understanding of the text by connecting written language with live performance.
According to Marfa ISD, the production highlighted themes students had explored in class, including character motivation, persuasive rhetoric, the consequences of individual choices, and how performance can shape meaning. Seeing those ideas play out on stage gave students a new perspective on the historical and cultural relevance of Shakespeare’s work.
The performance featured scenes from Shakespeare’s most well-known plays, offering students exposure to classical theatre and reinforcing how live performance can enhance comprehension of complex literary themes.
District officials said the trip reflects Marfa ISD’s ongoing efforts to connect classroom learning with experiential opportunities that broaden students’ appreciation of literature, history, and the arts.
“Experiences like this help students engage more deeply with the material and see how literature continues to shape conversations about society and human behavior,” the district said.
