A Marfa Independent School District science teacher is helping bring new hands-on STEM opportunities to local students after participating in a regional professional development program focused on science, technology, engineering and math education.
Marfa ISD science teacher Lora Loya recently took part in the Energy Day STEM Institute, a regional program designed to strengthen STEM instruction and increase student engagement through real-world applications. As part of the program, Loya earned a $750 scholarship, which covered her full participation and allowed her to build new professional connections with educators and industry partners.
According to Marfa ISD, one of the most significant outcomes of Loya’s participation was a new collaboration with the Petroleum Museum’s Education Director, which led to Marfa junior high students taking part in a hands-on STEM field trip to the museum. The experience gave students exposure to applied science concepts and career pathways connected to energy, geology and engineering.
District officials said the collaboration reflects a broader effort to connect classroom instruction with experiential learning opportunities that extend beyond Marfa.
“Thanks to dedicated educators like Mrs. Loya, innovative STEM learning opportunities continue to grow for our students,” the district said in a statement. “We are proud of her commitment to bringing meaningful, real-world learning to our Shorthorns.”
Marfa ISD has increasingly highlighted STEM instruction as a priority, emphasizing professional development for teachers and partnerships that give students practical learning experiences tied to regional industries and scientific fields.
