Sazzon Baja-Mex in Alpine Announces Permanent Closure Months After New Ownership

Sazzon Baja-Mex, the downtown Alpine restaurant known for its Baja-inspired Mexican cuisine, has permanently closed just a few months after coming under new ownership.

Owner Rico, who took over the restaurant earlier this year, announced the closure on Sunday, citing a period of personal reflection and a desire to pursue a different direction for his retirement. In a public statement, he said the decision will allow him to focus on long-term goals and spend more time with family.

“I’ve decided to permanently close the doors of Sazzon,” he wrote. “I will be pursuing a different direction for my retirement — one that has been my true dream.”

Rico thanked customers for their support and expressed appreciation for the staff who helped run the restaurant, acknowledging the challenges of operating a small business in a tourism-driven community like Alpine.

He highlighted the contributions of his general manager and lead server, noting that their work was central to the restaurant’s recent success. “I’m excited to see where this next chapter takes us,” he said.

Sazzon Baja-Mex originally opened in 2023 and had developed a loyal following before the transition in ownership earlier this year.

Rico encouraged residents to continue supporting Alpine’s locally owned businesses. “Small business ownership can be challenging in a tourist town,” he wrote.

No timeline was given for whether the space will be re-leased or whether a new restaurant concept may eventually take its place.
