Sul Ross State and Alpine ISD Leaders Host Panel on Public Education

Community members gathered earlier today at Sul Ross State University for the State of Public Education Panel, an event highlighting both the successes and challenges of schools in the Big Bend region.

Panelists included Dr. Carlos Hernandez, president of Sul Ross State University, and Dr. Michelle Rinehart, superintendent of Alpine ISD, with Rusty Moore of Big Bend Telephone serving as moderator.

Dr. Rinehart underscored Alpine ISD’s academic progress, including growth in career and technical education offerings and more than $6 million in combined grant and philanthropic funding secured over the past three years. She also outlined pressing challenges, pointing to persistent underfunding from the state, shifting demographics among school-aged children in the tri-county area, and millions of dollars in deferred maintenance.

Both leaders emphasized the value of partnerships between the district and university. A central example is the Alpine Child Development Center, a community-funded child care facility launched and sustained through joint efforts of Alpine ISD, Sul Ross, and local partners.

The event was supported by West Texas National Bank, Sul Ross State University, and Alpine Community Projects.
