Chinati Foundation Plans $5 Million Restoration of Historic Artillery Sheds in Marfa

The Chinati Foundation will undertake a $5 million restoration of two historic masonry artillery sheds at its campus in Marfa, according to state construction filings.

The project, located at 1 Cavalry Row in Presidio County, will involve repairs and restoration of the 34,954-square-foot structures, along with related site work. The sheds are a prominent feature of the foundation’s grounds, housing large-scale installations as part of its contemporary art collection.

Work is scheduled to begin Oct. 1, 2025, with completion expected by Dec. 1, 2026. The restoration is privately funded and will take place on private land for private use.

The Chinati Foundation, established by artist Donald Judd, is known for its permanent, large-scale art installations and preservation of historic buildings in Marfa.
