Ft Davis Independent School District graduated 100% of its Class of 2023 on time, according to newly released state data, continuing a trend of high school completion in one of Texas’ smallest districts.
With just 263 students enrolled in the 2023–2024 school year, Ft Davis ISD serves a sparsely populated area of West Texas. Nearly half the student body is Hispanic (48.7%) and nearly half is white (48.3%), with no reported enrollment of African American, Asian, American Indian, or Pacific Islander students.
Despite strong graduation and dropout prevention outcomes — the district reported a 0% dropout rate and just 9.1% of students classified as at risk of dropping out, far below the statewide rate of 53.2% — the district’s average ACT score of 16.2 trails the state average of 19.2. College readiness indicators also lag behind, with only 22.2% of graduates meeting benchmarks in both reading and math, compared to a statewide average of 48.4%.
No students participated in Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exams, and AP/IB exam performance data was not reported due to low participation.
Roughly 46% of students in the district were classified as economically disadvantaged, and 7.2% were identified as English language learners. Special education enrollment stood at 8.7%, and 4.6% of students were enrolled in gifted and talented programs.
The district employs 26.1 full-time equivalent teachers, 84.6% of whom are white and 15.4% Hispanic. Teachers in Ft Davis ISD have an average of 16.6 years of experience — well above the statewide average of 11.1 years — but earn lower salaries. The district’s average teacher salary of $53,683 is $8,791 below the Texas average.
Chronic absenteeism among Ft Davis ISD students was 13.1%, significantly lower than the statewide rate of 20.3%.
State accountability ratings for the 2023–2024 academic year remain unavailable due to a pending legal dispute over Texas Education Agency scoring methods. Until the matter is resolved, districts such as Ft Davis ISD will not receive letter grades.
