Davis Mountains Preserve Announces Open Weekend Dates for July and August

The Nature Conservancy’s Davis Mountains Preserve will open to the public for outdoor recreation during select weekends in July and August 2025, offering rare access to one of Texas’ most scenic and biologically significant areas.

The July Open Weekend is scheduled for Friday, July 11 through Sunday, July 13. The August dates are Friday, August 22 through Sunday, August 24. Access is permitted from 8 a.m. Friday through 5 p.m. Sunday. Overnight camping is allowed during these events, but advance registration is required.

Located in the heart of the Davis Mountains, the preserve is typically closed to the public and primarily serves as a research and conservation site. Open Weekends allow registered visitors to enjoy activities such as hiking, birding, biking, and nature photography.

High-clearance, street-legal vehicles are required to drive beyond the McIvor Conservation Center. Campfires, firearms, and pets are prohibited. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Visitors are required to pack out all waste.

Among the preserve’s highlights is the strenuous trail to Baldy Peak at Mount Livermore, which features a 1,800-foot elevation gain and typically takes 4–6 hours to complete. Hikers are advised to plan carefully, especially on Sundays when the preserve gates close at 5 p.m.

Public restrooms are available at the McIvor Conservation Center. Visitors should bring food, water, weather-appropriate clothing, and sun protection.

The Madera Canyon Trail remains open year-round from sunrise to sunset and does not require a reservation.
